Every facilitator should know how to lay out a labyrinth. No one is more qualified to teach that skill than Robert Ferré, who has spent the last two decades as a full-time labyrinth maker. As a special bonus, he will be assisted by Lars Howlett, a creative builder of spontaneous labyrinths. The first two days will include essential design considerations, an introduction to sacred geometry, a survey of contemporary labyrinths, and hands-on experience.

Topics will include:

  • The geometry of labyrinths
  • Principles of Sacred Geometry
  • Classical and medieval labyrinths
  • Contemporary labyrinth patterns
  • Tools and techniques
  • Making temporary labyrinths
  • How to make a labyrinth in 10 minutes
  • Materials for permanent labyrinths
  • Amenities and site enhancements
  • Painting a labyrinth on a wood floor
  • Making portable canvas labyrinths
  • The cost of making a labyrinth
  • Fees for professional labyrinth makers
  • Working with volunteers
  • Promotion and fundraising

This training is suitable for you if:

  • You have some knowledge of labyrinths
  • You want to make your own labyrinth
  • You want to hire someone to make a labyrinth
  • You are on a committee to obtain a labyrinth
  • You are an architect, artist, or designer
  • You want to make labyrinths as a business
  • You want to know “why” as well as “how”

“In my retirement I want to pass on my knowledge of

labyrinth building to as many people as possible, while I’m still coherent. This will be the most comprehensive training I have ever given. Participants will leave this training fully capable of making or advising about making labyrinths in a variety of

patterns and materials.”

~ Robert Ferre:

Assisting Robert Ferre will be his apprentice, Lars Howlett -- a talented and artistic labyrinth maker in his own right. Two presenters means more personal interaction, more questions answered, more hands-on experience.

Robert Ferre

Robert Ferre worked for 17 years as a full-time labyrinth maker. He invented many of the tools and techniques currently used today. He has been involved in all aspects of labyrinths, including research, writing, editing, training, lecturing, and building. He has served as builder or consultant for major labyrinths in the United States and abroad.

Lars Howlett

Lars Howlett is a holistic and intuitive labyrinth builder who specializes in creating site-specific labyrinths using natural materials. He designs, builds and walks labyrinths as a practice in mindfulness, setting intention and connecting with the present moment. Past projects include a ‘literal labyrinth’ of used books for the SF Poetry Festival, a labyrinth of shoes on the theme of immigration, and a labyrinth of coconuts in Puerto Rico. He is the apprentice to master builder Robert Ferre and a Veriditas Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. Lars leads workshops and meditative walks in the SF Bay Area and beyond.
